DMH is a district general hospital with 420 beds located ½ mile from the centre of Darlington on Woodlands Road. It is about 3 miles from the A1.e have 28 Consultants, 5 Staff/Associate Specialists/Speciality Doctors and provide training for 11 rotational trainees. We are a relatively small but very friendly department, aiming to provide a wide range of high quality training.

Surgical specialities covered include: orthopaedics/trauma, ENT, urology, general, oral surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, ophthalmology and bariatrics. In addition there is a regular GA paediatric MRI list. This allows a wide range of units of training to be undertaken as follows:

Intermediate level training

General Duties:

Airway management:

Core clinical learning outcome:

 To be able to demonstrate the ability to perform elective fibreoptic intubation, either for an awake or an anaesthetised patient, with local supervision

We can accommodate upto 3 trainees doing either intermediate or higher airway block per 6 months

There is an opportunity for trainees to participate in the mortality review group which meets weekly to review patient deaths.

Day Surgery

 Deliver safe perioperative anaesthetic care to ASA 1-3 patients having more extensive or specialized day surgery procedures with direct supervision

General, Urological and gynae surgery

Core clinical learning outcomes:

We can accommodate upto 4 trainees wanting either intermediate or higher training per 6 month block

Head, neck, max fac and dental surgery

Core clinical learning outcome:

We can accommodate upto 3 trainees doing either intermediate or higher airway block per 6 months

To be competent in the assessment and management of acute surgical and non-surgical pain in most patient groups and circumstances

Approx. 2700 deliveries per year

We can accommodate upto 3 basic or intermediate trainees per 6 months.

Fully competent in the assessment and management of acute surgical, acute non-­‐surgical and acute on chronic pain in all patients and in all circumstances

 To Have knowledge and skills in the management of chronic and cancer pain  to be an effective member of a multi-­‐professional pain management service

We can accommodate 2 intermediate or higher trainees per 6 months

Intensive Care:

10 bedded ITU /HDU

Staffed for 6 level 3 and 4 level 2 patients

We can offer intermediate or higher training for 2 trainees per 6 months.
